SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The Mitchell School Board has adopted a back-to-school plan that includes a mask mandate for anyone on school grounds.

The board adopted the Student Services Return to Schools Protocol Table in a 5-0 vote Monday night. The document says the Mitchell School District will follow guidelines by the South Dakota Health Department.

The plan includes a provision that anyone on school property will be required to wear a mask throughout the duration of the pandemic.

Dakota Radio Group reports several people on both sides of the mask mandate issue voiced their opinions in Monday night’s meeting. The group Mitchell Kernel Parents Against Mandatory Masks spoke against the mandate, saying it violates personal freedoms. Dakota Wesleyan University Biology Professor Brian Patrick spoke in favor of the plan, saying masks slow the spread of the coronavirus.

During the meeting, board member Neil Putnam told the audience the proposal is a draft document and is subject to change.
