Trump lashes out at Thune in yet another tweet
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - President Donald Trump has again targeted South Dakota Sen. John Thune for perceived lack of support in Trump’s ongoing efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election.
In a tweet Tuesday afternoon, Trump said he hopes Democrats, as well as the “ineffective RINO section of the Republican Party,” are watching the rallies in support of Trump currently happening in Washington D.C. RINO stands for “Republican in name only.”
The tweet tagged Thune, as well as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas.
Thune first garnered Trump’s ire when he acknowledged the president’s loss to challenger Joe Biden after electors certified Biden’s victory on Dec. 14. Politico reports Thune told reporters “in the end at some point you have to face the music. And I think that once the Electoral College settles the issue today, it’s time for everybody to move on.”
The president first singled out Thune in a Dec. 22 tweet, saying Thune’s political career is “over.” Then, in a a Jan. 1 tweet, Trump encouraged Gov. Kristi Noem, a close Trump ally, to run against Thune in the 2022 Senate primary.
Trump has made repeated claims of voter fraud in key states he lost in the Nov. 3 election. Those claims have been rejected by election officials in state after state, as well as judges, including justices on the Supreme Court. Trump’s former attorney general, William Barr, also has said there is no evidence of fraud that could change the election outcome.
