WATERTOWN, S.D. (KWAT) - South Dakota is expanding the list of people eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Prairie Lakes Healthcare System CEO K.C. DeBoer made the announcement that the department is opening up to Group 1E at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

“1E is a very extensive list of critical infrastructure workers in industry sectors that includes water and wastewater, energy, finance, food service, legal, manufacturing, shelter and housing, transportation and logistics, information technology, and communications,” DeBoer said.

The mass vaccination event to receive a COVID-19 vaccine will be Thursday, March 25th from 6:30 AM until 5:45 PM at the Codington County Extension building.

“The second dose for those individuals who get vaccinated that day will be on April 22nd also at the Codington County Extension building. Participation in the event requires pre-registration. Please do not present to the extension building without an appointment, as you will be turned away,” he said.

You can register for the event online. There are 800 slots available, and DeBoer said there will be more people that need to be vaccinated than the number of doses available.

“We know that demand to be vaccinated for this large group of individuals, we exceed our weekly vaccine allocation. We expect based on our current vaccine allocations to be able to vaccinate between 500 and 800 people per week for first doses. If allocations increase, of course we will expand our appointment availability,” DeBoer said.

About 35% of South Dakotans have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
