SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -Sarah Herbert was a Sioux Falls school teacher for many years, but now in retirement, she gets to add author to her resume.

Herbert says there is a lot to learn about the former presidential candidate and Avon, South Dakota native George McGovern. But when her students wanted to do reports on McGovern, there were no books available that were geared towards their age group.

Herbert decided she would write one herself.

“I originally wrote it because I was teaching 4th grade at the time and we studied South Dakota history and many times the kids would be doing a project on a famous South Dakotan and what impact they had on South Dakota and George McGovern was often chosen but the information out the there for kids was always written at an adult level,”she said.

George McGovern famously ran for president in 1972 and is considered one of the most popular politicians in the state’s history.

“If you google famous politicians in the 50 states they will go through and tell you who they think was the most famous in each state and George McGovern is who they say for South Dakota” Says Herbert.

Much of what McGovern accomplished in office can still be felt today in South Dakota and throughout the country, including his school lunch program.

Herbert’s book was released near the end of 2020 and she hopes that it will continue to make its way to South Dakota youngsters in the coming months.

The book is geared primarily towards kids between 4th and 8th grade, but many adults have enjoyed reading it as well, saying there were many facts the average person would not know.

The book is available for purchase on Amazon.
