Police identify second victim in fatal Sioux Falls crash
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Sioux Falls Police gave an update on a fatal crash crash over the weekend which left a 17-year-old and 20-year-old dead.
On Saturday, a vehicle turning west onto Arrowhead Parkway from Highline Avenue was struck by another vehicle running a red light. Witnesses told police the vehicle running the red light was traveling at approximately 100 mph.
The 17-year-old driver of the vehicle that was struck, Javier Edgardo Velasquez from Brandon, was killed. The passenger of that vehicle, 20-year-old Pascal Niyonkuru from Sioux Falls, was also killed. Two other passengers from that vehicle, a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The driver and passenger of the speeding vehicle, both 23-year-old males, were also transported to the hospital with injuries. The driver of the vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries.
On Tuesday, police say the investigation is ongoing and that it’s too early to determine if seatbelts were used. Police have determined racing was not a cause for the speeding and crash. According to traffic cameras, there was no other vehicle speeding. Witnesses told police only one vehicle was speeding through the intersection of Arrowhead Pkwy and Sycamore Avenue.
No updates were given on those injured in the crash.
Police are still looking for more eyewitnesses to come forward if they saw anything.
