Western Christian advances to Boys Soccer championship Saturday
Wolfpack down West Liberty to make title game
DES MOINES, IA (Dakota News Now) -The 2nd-seeded Western Christian boys took on the high-scoring Comets of West Liberty in the Class 1-A semi’s today in Des Moines.
The Wolfpack looking for their first State Soccer Championship since 1996.
With six minutes left in the first half, West Liberty’s Jahsiah Galvan with the goal, West Liberty goes into the half up 1-0.
But the Wolfpack roared back after intermission. Off the penalty kick, Bailey Baccum ties the game at 1-1. And that’s how it stayed until the 7:00 mark when Bailey Baccum’s shot is stopped, but Eli Van Essen is Johnny-on-the-spot and knocks it in to put Western Christian up 2-1, and that’s how this one would end.
Head coach Stu Baccum says, ” I’m terribly proud of these guys. I mean we were down one nil and they did hand their heads a little bit, but you know, they battled back, they battled hard, it’s a hot day out here. I mean they just kept grinding it out and that’s what we needed to do to climb back in.”
Eli Van Essen, who scored the game winning goal says, “Honestly, it’s unbelievable, I can’t even put into words how crazy it is. I’m so grateful to be here and I love this team, so i’m grateful to be here.”
The 16-1 Wolfpack will face Notre Dame/West Burlington at noon on Saturday in the 1-A title game.
