Top Prospects & Parity Highlight South Dakota State A Legion Season
National tournaments, including Central Plains Regional in Sioux Falls, return after COVID cancellation in 2020
RENNER, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A year ago at this time we were wondering if there would be any baseball this summer as the Legion season was put on hold during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Now 2021 promises to be one of the best summer’s in South Dakota history highlighted by some Division One college and Major League prospects.
With the high school season ending last Tuesday Legion play began in earnest and Class A in South Dakota is deep and loaded with talent.
Renner features one of the top pitching tandems in the state with South Dakota State commit Reece Arbogast & Wichita State commit Austin Henry. That’s matched just down the road in Harrisburg by North Carolina-bound Will Simmons and Nebraska-bound Chase Mason, who could well be selected in the opening rounds of the MLB draft next month.
Defending state champion Rapid City Post 22 is talented as always but has lost to Pierre and dropped three out of four at Watertown thus far this season.
Sioux Falls East, who swept a twin bill in Pierre today, Sioux Falls West, Brandon Valley and a host of others also could also make noise at the State Tournament late next month in Brandon.
And all the national tournaments that were cancelled last year by COVID are back on this year, including the Central Plains Region Tournament which will be held in Sioux Falls.
