Potential for Dangerous Storms Tonight
Tornadoes, Damaging Wind Gusts, and Large Hail All Possible
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -- A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has been issued for western South Dakota until 3:00 AM tonight.
The initial risks will be for a few tornadoes, large hail, and damaging wind gusts. As these storms continue to move east, there will be plenty of fuel for the storms to work with. As the storms arrive in the Pierre area and locations along the Missouri tonight all of those risks for severe weather will still be in play.
As the storms continue to move east, the main threat will become damaging wind gusts. These storms will have the power to produce wind gusts well over 70 mph. It’s a good idea to bring in anything outside that you possibly can such as garbage cans, hanging flowers, and patio furniture. These storms won’t arrive until the I-29 area until just before sunrise Friday morning and still will have the threat to bring strong wind gusts.
Conditions improve for Friday night as highs cool to the lower 80′s and the humidity drops off significantly. We’ll be in for a quiet weekend with sunshine and the heat will be coming back as highs climb into the upper 80′s to the lower 90′s by Sunday. Much of next week is looking to stay dry other than a chance for rain in the eastern part of the area Monday and again next Thursday.
Stay with your First Alert Weather Team as we track these storms!
