Selfie Wrld celebrates National Selfie Day
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The art of taking a picture has evolved ever since social media and smartphones became readily available, so much so that we now are celebrating selfies, June 21 is National Selfie Day.
For Connor Stewart and Darnell Pitts, two local social media influencers, the internet is a playground full of opportunity.
Stewart has nearly 19,000 followers on Instagram. She says selfies are a great way to express yourself.
“It doesn’t just have to be, you know, hold your phone out in front of you and snap a picture of your face,” Stewart said. “You can get really creative, especially with the technology, props, and tools that we have nowadays.”
As for Pitts, he blew up on Tik Tok.
“I had a video that just went viral,” Pitts said. “I just (took a video of) me dancing silly and all that, and apparently people like it.”
While Tik Toks are different than selfies, much of the concept is the same.
“You want to be seen and heard, and these different platforms offer that availability to do so,” Pitts said.
Selfie Wrld, inside the Empire Mall, has taken that concept and brought it to the people.
“Some people might look at it as vain or into yourself, but it’s more so a way to express yourself, show your creative side, and really just loving the skin that you’re in, and being able to love a photo of yourself, and being able to share that with the world,” Stewart said.
With 25 different rotating booths, co-owners Salena Reimers and Janelle Aday, say Selfie Wrld provides a one-stop shop for anyone looking to take that perfect picture or video.
“It’s not necessarily about a selfie, as it is just getting together with people and taking pictures to create your memories,” Reimers said.
And while many do it just for fun, it only takes one moment to create a name for yourself.
“Normal, everyday people can become overnight sensations, and it doesn’t take much to do that, which is great,” Pitts said.
