Sioux Falls moving companies busy as housing market booms
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -As the housing market continues to stay red hot, finding a place to live is getting more difficult. Now, folks are running into another problem: finding a moving company. Many are booked up due to the high demand.
Phone lines are busy and trucks remain loaded for moving companies like Two Men and a Truck and Movin’ On Out.
“Even through the pandemic we didn’t slow down, we got busier actually during the pandemic. You know without friends and family being able to come and help move...And even now, even more busy as housing is getting sold faster and faster,” said Angela Drake, General Manager Two Men and a Truck.
The booming housing market, coupled with the pandemic is keeping these companies very busy.
“Last year was the busiest year in 21 years and this is set to beat that this year,” said
John Bowman, Manager of Movin’ On Out.
“A lot of people moving from other places to Sioux Falls. There are lots of people coming from California. There’s a lot of people leaving Minneapolis coming here. And so I mean we’re seeing a lot of people that are migrating to South Dakota,” he added.
To keep up with the demand, both companies are hiring more help.
“So we’ve got 20 employees we’re running right now. That’s how busy we are. Normally we’re about 12 to 14 through this time of year,” said Bowman.
“Right now we have five of our own trucks and we’re running some rental trucks and looking to grow our trucks and looking to grow our team. Right now, we have about 30 team members,” said Drake.
Bowman says his crew is doing double the amount of moves they usually do this time of year.
“You know lots of manpower for the moves cause we’re doing so many moves per day...For average we’re probably doing six to eight moves per day,” said Bowman.
His advice for those getting ready to move is to plan ahead.
“It doesn’t really matter how far out you are, if you’re within a couple of months of moving, you need to be calling a moving company and getting on a schedule immediately because we’re already booking far towards the end of next month,” said Bowman.
He recommends getting the ball rolling as soon as you set your closing date or moving date.
