SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Many basketball fans are excited to be able to see their teams in action this weekend at the Premier Center, but having fans back at games for this year’s tournament won’t just be a slam dunk for Sioux Falls as teams and players are always hoping to feed off the crowd’s energy.

”It changes your mindset as a player. When the fans are in the seats and yelling and screaming and you make a big shot and they’re going wild it just creates a different energy and a different experience for the student-athletes, so we’re excited to bring that back to them,” Summit League Assistant Commissioner for Communications Ryan Powell said.

The Summit League was funded in 1982 so this year fans will get to experience several 80′s themed things at the tournament including a Delorean, slap bracelets, and even a visit from the Ghostbusters.

REACHING THE SUMMIT: 2022 Summit League Tournament Preview

”Our fans are here cause they love watching great college basketball but I think the experience in and of itself that the league puts on that the community of Sioux Falls embraces I think is the experience the fans really enjoy and when they come into the city and come into the premier center are really looking forward to,” Powell said.

This 2022 tournament is a welcomed sight for many after COVID restrictions made things very difficult at the 2021 tournament.

“It was hard last year. We had so many different restrictions and protocols in place to try to keep our teams safe so they could move on to the NCAA tournament so we were probably overly protective in a lot of ways but this year we’re excited to be back,” Summit League Commissioner Elect Josh Fenton said.

The men’s and women’s Summit League Basketball tournaments both tip-off on Saturday and conclude on Tuesday.
