Sioux Falls churches raising funds for Ukrainian church housing refugees
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -Among the harrowing stories of Ukrainians fleeing their homes or sheltering in bunkers, stories also emerge of extraordinary care. Complete strangers are taking others in.
Recently we shared the story of Regina Brunz, born in Ukraine, growing up in Sioux Falls, and now praying for her family whose lives have been turned upside down.
About a dozen members of Regina’s family in Kyiv continue to shelter in bunkers and pray. Another branch of the family to the west is offering food and shelter to complete strangers at their church.
“My uncle Genadiy has a church on Khmelnitsky, They have taken in dozens of refugees coming from the East of Ukraine in the past few days. They are providing bedding, clothing, food, and shelter out of their own funds,” said Regina.
On Wednesday night, 70 people stayed the night in the church, while outside in a tent, a steady stream of other refugees in winter gear accept warm coffee and food.
She hopes South Dakotans looking to help could contribute to her Uncle’s outpouring of care to those who have fled the hot zones of war to find a place of safety.
The church is in an area with about the same population as Sioux Falls.
There are two ways to donate.
