ABERDEEN, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The Aberdeen Humane Society has an update on the near overflow of cats at the shelter last week.
Staff have confirmed an outbreak of feline panleukopenia (also known as feline distemper) among some of the cats at the shelter.
Panleukopenia is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that affects unvaccinated kittens and cats.
According to the shelter, they’re taking the following preventative measures:
- Working closely with a team of veterinarians to minimize the length of the outbreak
- Temporarily halted all feline intakes and adoptions. Doors are still closed to visitors and adopters at the time.
- Affected areas are under strict supervision and undergoing sanitation
- Exposed and symptomatic cats are being monitored and receiving treatment
- Re-evaluating the medical and quarantine process
The shelter urges residents to regularly vaccinate their pets, especially kittens.
