SDSU golf coach wins first SDGA Amateur Championship with a dramatic playoff finish
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - One last day of South Dakota Amateur Golf Championships.
The men’s tournament came down to the final hole on the last round.
Parker Edens, SDSU golf coach and Jake Olson, SDSU junior matched up in the top group today.
Edens was doing well early picking up a birdie on the second hole, Olson was keeping right up as he did the same.
But Dakota Munger, the Dakota Wesleyan two sport athlete in baseball and golf heated up.
A great set up shot on hole five set him up for a birdie of his own.
Munger surged up the leaderboard today, a birdie on hole 16 and Edens bogey on hole 17 set up a dramatic final hole.
Both golfers would par the finale to make it time playoff hole.
Munger had a long third shot but he put himself in a position to still finish with par.
The SDSU men’s golf coach sent a chip with the right amount of backspin putting him slightly closer.
After a very close try from Munger went just wide, Edens was able to sink the par putt to win his first Amateur Championship here in South Dakota.
Parker Edens, SDSU men’s golf coach and 2026 SDGA Men’s Golf Amateur Champion said, “Obviously a huge goal of mine just to be able to compete and contend in this thing but I’ve been really close I was close last year, I was close in State Amateur back in Colorado when lived there and grew up there. Never been able to win one so really cool, lucky to win, it’s exciting for sure.”
According to the SDGA, Edens receives an exemption into the US Amateur Championship at Merion Golf Club later this summer.
