TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD/Gray News) - A man wanted in the killing of his dentist in Mexico died in a shootout with police two days later, authorities said.

The attorney general’s office in Nogales, Sonora, said Ernest N., 30, an American citizen, was wanted in the death of dentist Amed de Jesus N., 42, on Oct. 15 in Nogales.

Two days later, Ernest N. died when he confronted officers attempting to arrest him in Agua Prieta, Mexico.

According to authorities, Ernest N. had received dental treatment from the victim and went to the office demanding immediate attention on Oct. 15. Unable to receive treatment at that time, he allegedly waited outside, then stalked the dentist and shot him multiple times.

Police believe the motive stemmed from a complaint about a previous dental procedure.

Authorities said the suspect was quickly identified and an arrest warrant was obtained. He was located at a home in Agua Prieta, where officers conducted a tactical operation.

During the operation, Ernest N. opened fire on officers. Authorities returned fire, killing him. Two members of the Mexican police were injured in the operation.

According to the attorney general’s office, Ernest N. had a U.S. criminal record for drug-related crimes. Mexican police are coordinating with the U.S. consulate on the case.
