Hannah Ekwall, Lexie Merley and Annie Witt spoke with members of the campus community throughout the morning to learn what the tradition means to them. The broadcast also gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the journalism industry.
Joshua Westwick, director of the SDSU School of Communication and Journalism, said the live broadcast benefits students.
“Having the live broadcast here on campus is a great experience for our students. To be able to visibly see local journalism, local storytelling, to see the value of that happening right here in their campus, at their home, is a really great opportunity,” Westwick said.
For students already working in campus media, watching a professional broadcast offered a look at what their own careers may look like.
Kennedy Foster, a senior journalism major and assistant broadcast director for Collegian Media, said the experience was relevant to her upcoming job search.
“To watch the live broadcast this morning was so interesting because come spring, I’ll be looking for that job. I’m hopefully becoming like a beat reporter type deal,” Foster said.
Andrew Lewno said the broadcast showed how industry professionals operate.
“Since we make our own newscast every Friday, it’s really, really good to see kind of the industry standard, how professionals are doing it,” Lewno said.
Dakota News Now became part of the Hobo Day celebration, helping bring the SDSU community together on and off screen.
