Jackley: Gun suppressors ‘important’ in South Dakota
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - South Dakota’s top prosecutor says firearm suppressors are more than just a Second Amendment issue—they are a major economic driver in his state.
Attorney General Marty Jackley said a recent Texas court decision regarding suppressors, and the ATF’s decision not to appeal that decision, make South Dakota’s suppressor law that much more of a landmark law.
“The way I look at it as Attorney General, the reason I joined the litigation with several other attorneys general to get us to this point, suppressors are important here in South Dakota,” Jackley told Dakota News Now. “Number one, they’re important for hearing protection and recoil protection, especially for kids. They’re also important for economic development. We have manufacturing and distribution of suppressors significantly here in South Dakota. And third, I’ve always viewed it as a Second Amendment right. And that’s what the South Dakota legislature said last session with Senate Bill 2, when they took it off the Controlled Weapon Registry. So this recent development, the win of us attorneys general in Texas, the decision of ATF to not appeal it, I think is a good thing. So suppressors and silencers are treated just like any other firearm when you purchase one in South Dakota.”
While suppressors can now be purchased like any standard firearm under South Dakota law, Jackley cautions gun owners to check state and local regulations before crossing state lines.
