According to Abode Analytics, shoppers are expected to spend about $7.7 billion this Cyber Monday, which is $1.2 billion more than 2017. According to Adobe, shoppers spent $6.5 billion in 2017. Online sales between 9:00 PM and 12:00 AM central time on Cyber Monday are expected to drive more revenue than an average full day in 2018.
The weekend of shopping started with Black Friday with some stores actually opening the evening of Thanksgiving. It's important to be safe during this time and protect yourself from fraud though. Remember that if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is.
The Better Business Bureau has several tips to protect your identity and shop wisely this Cyber Monday. According to the Federal Trade Commission, orders made online should be shipped by the date promised. If there isn't an expected delivery date, then it needs to be within 30 days. If the product can't be shipped on time, then the shopper must be notified of the right to cancel and receive a refund.
It's important to pay with a credit card. This is the easiest way to dispute charges if the item is not received. Shopper should watch for phishing emails as well. Don't click on links from senders you don't recognize.
Hackers also like to target children. The reason why is because they haven't established a credit history. Be sure to talk to your family about not giving out personal information.
