27-year-old man dies in sixth Sturgis Rally fatal crash
The South Dakota Department of Safety says a sixth fatal crash has happened at the Sturgis Rally.
According to the department's daily Rally Tally, a 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan was eastbound on U.S. Highway 16 just after 7:10 a.m. Thursday near Custer when the driver lost control of the vehicle and went into the ditch.
The 27-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the three other occupants, a 20-year-old man, sustained life-threatening injuries. The other two passengers, a 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, both received serious non-life threatening injuries.
All were taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Authorities are still investigating the crash.
As of Friday at 6 a.m., there have been six fatal accidents and 59 injury accidents at the Sturgis Rally.
Those numbers are up from this time last year, where there were only two fatal accidents and 44 injury accidents, according to the Rally Tally.
