Sioux Falls native Rebecca Flinn is returning to her hometown to shoot the short film “Hutterite” this June. Flinn wrote and will direct the film, which is inspired by her mother’s own upbringing, and escape, from a Hutterite colony in the 1960s South Dakota. Hutterites are an Anabaptist sect of Christianity that choose to live communally.
“My mother’s story has inspired me for years,” says Flinn. “Knowing hardly any English or anyone outside the colony, she left at 21 to pursue an education and build a life of her own. I have been thinking about how to share her experience for more than a decade and am thrilled to finally have the opportunity to bring it to life.”
Flinn says she feels fortunate to be shooting the film in her hometown of Sioux Falls. “It’s been a lifelong dream to do a project where I grew up. All of the local people and organizations I’ve worked with have been so open and generous with their time. I am proud and excited to be shooting here.”
The film will include some local crew and cast, including extras and a few small speaking roles. The lead cast, listed below, includes actors with past credits including “Modern Family”, “Gotham”, and “The Grinder”.
Brooke Sorenson - (MODERN FAMILY) as Marigold
Drew Powell - (GOTHAM) as Minister
Kimmy Gatewood - (GLOW, CONAN) as Grace
Logan Sutherland - (THE MONOPOLY CLUB) as George
Connor Kalopsis - (THE GRINDER) as Young George
Presley Richardson - (DEMONS) as Young Marigold
Kimberly Horner -(COUGAR TOWN) as Nancy
A portion of the film is being crowd-funded on Seed and Spark, a website devoted to showcasing diverse voices in entertainment. Flinn hopes to raise $35,000 by June 15 and is offering a variety of South Dakota-themed incentives, including handmade tea towels and Hutterite slippers, to donors.
