Aberdeen mom creates business to help children develop appropriate skills

ABERDEEN, S.D. (KSFY) - An Aberdeen mom-daughter duo has created a new business in hopes of helping kids all over the country learn appropriate skills for their ages. Stages of FUNdamentals, LLC (Stages of Fun) is now up and running, and it offers boxes full of classic and innovative toys for children from 0 to 5 years of age.

Each box contains top-quality, non-battery operated toys and educational items that are safe and appropriate for the age and developmental stage of each child.

Mikala Simon and her mother Bonny launched the business at the end of August. It's very new, but they say they hope it takes off and helps these young kids.

Simon is a physical therapist working in Aberdeen. "When working with families, a question I receive often, especially around the holidays, is 'What should I buy my child to help them gain their skills?'" she said.

While working in her field, she began to notice other things as well.

"I noticed a few things. First, the frustration of trying to find and buy a high quality product that was both a useful toy and something a child wanted to play with... Second, the increased use of screens and screen time in children... Third, the way a child plays with a toy can greatly change the benefits they receive. I had the answers to all of these questions and wanted to spread this knowledge to help as many families as I could," she said.

This is when the idea for Stages of FUN arose, and now parents, grandparents, family members, friends and more can purchase these toy kits for loved ones. The kits come with information about what a child should be able to do at each age.

Simon used her physical therapist background to research the best toys for each age group. The kits are bi-monthly for the first year and then bi-yearly after that. People are able to buy just one kit at a time or bundles of the kits. Each kit is about $55.
