Authorities respond to underground transformer explosion in Watertown

No one was hurt after an underground transformer exploded in downtown Watertown, causing a manhole cover to fly 15 feet into the air.

According to Watertown Fire Rescue, authorities received a report of a fire and explosion in an underground electrical vault near 2nd Street S. & 2nd Street E around 6 a.m. Friday.

When firefighters arrived, they saw black smoke coming from a manhole. A witness said he heard an explosion and saw the manhole cover blow off and into the air approximately 15 feet.

Crews monitored the vault. The smoke eventually cleared up, an no fire was.

Electrical crews later arrived to assess the situation and make repairs.
