Update: One man dead in plane crash in McCook County

Update: One man has died after a plane crash in McCook County.

McCook County Emergency Manager Brad Stiefvater said the man on board the single engine plane at the time of the crash was having health issues during his course and was having trouble flying the plane because of it.

Air traffic control ended up losing contact with the pilot after ten minutes just before it crashed west of Canistota.

Stiefvater said traffic control was attempting to help the man circle around the area until he could land, but the plane did crash.

Stiefvater could not confirm what kind of health issues the pilot was experiencing before the crash. He said that will be determined later on.

The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and will be on scene collecting more information about this crash.

The area has been blocked off for most of the afternoon as authorities investigated and are working to clean up the scene.

McCook County officials say they won't be releasing more information until the family is notified.

Authorities in McCook County are responding to a report of a small plane crash.

It happened just after 2:30 Sunday afternoon in the area of 263rd Street and 440th Avenue.

It is not yet known how many people were on board or what their conditions are.

The McCook County Sheriff's Office and Emergency Management did not comment when reached Sunday afternoon.
