Beer and wine will not be coming soon to a theater near you.
The Sioux Falls City Council voted 8-0 Tuesday night to deny West Mall 7's application for a malt beverage license.
West Mall had hoped to become the only theater in Sioux Falls to join the growing trend of offering alcohol to movie-goers.
Todd Frager, the owner of the theater, said during the meeting that the theater would remain a family-friendly business. He said alcohol sales would be limited to certain areas, and bartenders would be trained to avoid over-serving patrons.
Several council members voiced concerns over the idea, especially over how many minors attend the theater. Council member Rex Rolfing said it could start a precedent for other theaters in the city.
Frager countered by stating how there is already a casino at the Western Mall, as well as a restaurant that serves alcohol. He also pointed out how alcohol is sold at other venues where minors visit, like stadiums and auditoriums.
Ultimately, the council voted unanimously against the plan.
