Bees kill dog, sting several others including police officers in Sturgis
Bees held in a commercial beehive in Sturgis have killed a dog and stung several people including police officers.
Authorities responded to a call Friday after the keeper tried to add more bees to the hive.
The beekeeper's dog was near the hive and was attacked by German and Brazilian honey bees.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says officers and Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department personnel were chased blocks away after they were overcome by the stinging insects.
VanDewater was among those pierced multiple times. He says one officer received 47 stings.
Authorities cordoned off an 8-block area, and a relative of the beekeeper came and worked to get them into the hive.
VanDewater says he's uncertain about regulations against beekeeping in the city.
