Celebrating Hanukkah in Sioux Falls with menorah lighting ceremony
Sunday night the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah officially started. The holiday lasts until December 10th so for the next eight nights, one candle on the menorah will be lit.
Sunday night people packed a room at Augustana University in Sioux Falls to help ring in Hanukkah. A six-foot menorah was ignited in a celebration that brought both Jewish and non-Jewish people together to celebrate their religious freedom.
Many people said it’s amazing to see the community come together, especially after the recent synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, and help add some light to the world.
Although the world may seem dark and bad all we need to do is add one candle every day. Just make today better than yesterday and tomorrow better than today,” Chabad Jewish Center of South Dakota Rabbi Mendel Alperowitz said.
This is the third year the event has been held in Sioux Falls.
