A northwestern Sioux Falls couple had their dog taken by a coyote early Saturday morning.

Despite the owner yelling at the coyote, it continued to walk up into the yard and take the small dog.

Sioux Falls Animal Control has been monitoring the situation and has implemented several measures to haze (e.g., scare) and trap the coyote.

Sioux Falls Animal Control says coyotes use wooded and grassy areas such as drainage areas for homes. They are naturally timid and normally run away if confronted. Occasionally a coyote becomes aggressive due to lack of fear for humans.

Animal Control says that if you see a coyote, you should yell and wave your arms, making lots of noise, throw sticks or small stones or use various repellents; such as water, vinegar water, pepper spray or bear repellent.
