Free essentials given away at back-to-school fair
A back to school fair was held at St. Joseph’s school at the Sioux Falls Cathedral Saturday, helping area families get the essentials they need to start the school year.
More than 1,500 people come out to this event each year. Every child is given free socks and underwear, free vision screens and many other free community services and giveaways.
“Our goal is twofold, one, to help them get ready to go back to school, but also to let them know that there are caring adults in the community and that is evident by all of the people here volunteering and all of the agencies that are hear and that helps prevent substance abuse,” Prairie View Prevention Services President Darcy Jensen said.
Prairie View Prevention services sponsors the event every year with the help of dozens of other community organizations and volunteers. Jensen says these kind of community events help deter substance abuse in teens.
