Harrisburg assistant principal receives award for disarming student

Harrisburg High School's assistant principal is among 21 individuals across the United States and Canada to receive a Carnegie Medal for extraordinary civilian heroism.

Ryan Rollinger tackled a 16-year-old male student after he shot principal Kevin Lein on Sept. 30, 2015.

Rollinger heard the gunshot from Lein's office, and went to see what happened. He attempted to tackle the boy from behind, but the student got away.

Rollinger chased the student to the front of the school where he was able to tackle the boy and disarm him.

The student was arrested, Lein went to the hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound in his arm, and Rollinger was treated for minor cuts and scrapes.

According to the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, "the medal is given to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others."
