It's the new "the dress": A four-second audio clip has triggered a heated debate on the internet.

In the viral clip, a robotic voice says a single word that has divided the online community, as some people swear they hear "yanny" while others can only hear "laurel."

Some people claim to hear both at different times, only adding to the confusion.

The question was first posed on Reddit. Twitter user @CloeCouture posted it to Twitter, and by Tuesday night, it had gone viral across social media.

An audio expert told

that the anomaly is due to the poor quality of the recording, as well as what device people are using to listen to the recording.
