Police: Man who fired shots, tried to set home on fire was drunk

Police say a man arrested Monday after he fired shots in his home and tried to start it on fire was drunk during the incident.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said 59-year-old John Vela had a PBT of 0.241.

Officers arrested Vela on domestic simple assault, first degree arson, commission of a felony with a firearm, possession of firearm while intoxicated, reckless discharge of firearm and making terroristic threats.

Police were called to Vela's home after his wife contacted authorities around 3 p.m. saying her husband had been making comments about threatening to kill her over the phone while she was away from their home.

Officers went to the mobile home in the 6800 block of Pine Meadows Place, but Vela refused to come out.

His wife called police again around 4:30 p.m. saying Vela had been leaving her threatening voicemails, and she even heard gunshots in one.

Officers went back to the mobile home. Vela made a comment about lighting the home on fire before surrendering to police.

Neighbors told police they also heard gunshots. Police believe Vela fired 10 shots, but none are believed to have left the home. No injures were reported.

Police say a man has been arrested following shots fired at a home in western Sioux Falls.

The incident happened at the mobile home near Valley View Road and Pine Meadows Place.

Police said the man fired gunshots and poured gasoline inside the home before agreeing to come out peacefully and surrendering to officers.

The man was alone inside the mobile home. Crews evacuated are residents during the incident.

Police have not released his name at this time.

One person who lives in the area told KSFY News they were surprised this happened.

"I've known the guy for about five years, nice guy, visited with him all the time, always said hi to him, so wild," Tyler Lund said.

Police did not say if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
