OYO: Succulents, a popular conversation piece
Succulent plants are popular this year, and many people use them as a conversation piece in their homes or outside in the summer. Lewis Lawn and Garden expert Doug Schroeder has some tips when planting these thicker, fleshy plants.
"What a succlant is, is a type of plant that stores water. It stores water in the leaves," Schroeder said.
There are many different types of succulents that you can find at Lewis. It's popular to place an assortment together.
"I like to start out with the thriller in the pot and work from there," Schroeder said.
In the attached video, Schroeder has many tips.
"I recommend when planting succulents, put them about an inch apart," he said.
There is also a specific potting mix for succulents that you can find at Lewis. It drains well.
"I recommend people water them thoroughly and then let them dry. I would say once a week would be good," Schroeder said.
There is one big difference when planting succulents.
"The one thing you want when you plant succulents, you don't want to allow a lot of space for water to pool in the container. It's a little different than planting other annuals," Schroeder said.
It's important to note, bring the succulents inside once the warm summer months are over.
