Police: Man pepper sprayed while trying to catch alleged shoplifter

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Police say an employee of a Sioux Falls business was pepper sprayed while trying to catch a shoplifter Friday afternoon.

Sgt. Paul Creviston with the Sioux Falls Police Department says the assault happened at a business near 10th Street and Sycamore Avenue around 3:30 p.m.

Creviston says the employee suspected a customer was attempting to shoplift, and began following him around the store.

The suspect left the store, and the victim followed him outside and stood in the doorway to see where he went.

Creviston says the suspect then came back to the store and sprayed the victim in the face with pepper spray. He took off on foot.

The suspect is described as a 6'3" Native American male and about 150 pounds. The victim, a white male in his mid 50s, was taken to Sanford for medical treatment.

Creviston did not say if anything was taken from the store.
