A proposed initiated measure that looks to legalize marijuana in South Dakota could make it on the November 2020 ballot.

The measure would allow anyone over 21 in the state to possess, grow and sell marijuana. Those under 21 would be allowed to use the drug with a doctor's permission.

The petition must have signatures of registered voters equal to five percent (16,961) of the total vote for governor in the last gubernatorial election to make it on the ballot, according to the secretary of state's office.
