The second annual South Dakota Salutes shooting event kicked off Monday at the Hunters Pointe Shooting Complex in Humboldt.

The event was free to first responders and military personnel, and it featured a rifle, pistol and sporting clay competitions.

The goal was to bring local heroes together to say thanks to the people that protect the community every day, and to raise money to support their families in a time of need.

"We raised about $50,000 last year, and we put that into a trust fund, and when one of our first responders looses a life in the line of duty, we will give the family a check for $10,000," South Dakota Salutes chairman Tony Bour said.

The event continues Tuesday. The winner of each competition will receive a trophy, and more importantly, bragging rights.
