South Dakota Secretary of State kills rattlesnake outside home
South Dakota Secretary of State Shantel Krebs shot a rattlesnake outside her home Wednesday during a storm.
Krebs was outside taking down her flag when she spotted the uncoiled snake under a bush by the deck, just three feet away.
With her husband away from home, Krebs had to take matters into her own hands.
She went inside, got her judge pistol, put in five rounds, went outside into the 60 mile-an-hour wind, and shot the snake.
"It's one of those moments where the adrenaline kicks in," Krebs said. "It's amazing how you stop, and think, and reason."
The snake was 32 inches long and had eight buttons, which she calls her badge of honor.
While her husband shot two last year, this is the first snake Krebs has ever shot.
"It was way to close for comfort," she said.
Krebs got a lot of attention after she posted photos and a video of the snake on her Facebook page.
"It's a nice break of the serious agenda of the Secretary of State's Office," she said.
