The Watertown Police Department says a Codington County Deputy Sheriff was injured after being dragged about a half a mile during a traffic stop.

It happened near the 1400 block of Highway 20 around 8:45 Saturday night. Police say the deputy made a minor traffic stop, suspected drugs and the suspect took off.

Authoriites say the deputy was dragged by the vehicle while he attempted to apprehend the suspect who then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a street sign off the road and then fled on foot.

A portion of Highway 20 was shutdown Saturday evening as authorities searched for the suspect. They say a tip from the public led them to arrest Jacob Englehart, 19, of Watertown. He has been charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement, aggravated eluding in a vehicle and drug possession with intent to distribute.

The Watertown Police Department says this is an ongoing investigation and more charges may be pending. They say a 'substantial amount of marijuana, THC Hash, and other paraphernalia was recovered.'

The deputy was taken to the Prairie Lake Hospital where he was treated and later released.
