Iowa farmers sound alarm as Trump administration backs $20 billion Argentina bailout
POLK COUNTY, Iowa (KCCI) — Iowa farmers are expressing voicing frustration over the Trump Administration’s $20 billion bailout to stabilize Argentina’s economy.
Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent said the U.S. finalized a $20 billion loan with Argentina’s central bank, where the U.S. Treasury will exchange dollars for pesos.
Trump praised the move while hosting Argentine President Javier Milei at the White House this week.
The financial assistance comes as Iowa soybean producers face economic challenges from ongoing trade disputes with China, which typically purchases a quarter of U.S.-grown soybeans every year. The Hawkeye state is the nation’s second-largest soybean producer.
Until the trade dispute is resolved, farmers will need aid to make ends meet.
“Our farmers are angry,” said Polk County farmer and president of the Iowa Farmers Union Aaron Lehman. “We’re facing a financial crisis because we’ve been avoiding common-sense trade policies and instead have started trade wars with many countries around the world.”
Iowa State University economics professor Chad Hart described the situation as “more insult to injury right now” for struggling farmers.
Hart noted that while there has been discussion of federal support for U.S. farmers, plans have been put to the side amidst the government shutdown.
The timing of the Argentina bailout particularly frustrates farmers, as it supports a competitor during a period when U.S. producers traditionally dominate certain markets.
“Not only are we not selling into China, but here’s the case where Argentina is at a time when we traditionally own that market,” Hart said.
Lehman questioned the administration’s priorities, asking, “How can the current Administration justify a bailout for Argentina, continue a trade war with China, and then fail to deliver a promised aid package to US farmers?”
President Trump says the deal is strategic.
“If Argentina does well, you’re going to have others following,” Trump said, “and a lot of others are following.”
